Getting Over Intimidation Of BJJ

So you’re interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. You may have even signed up for a class, got yourself a uniform, or maybe you’ve even done a few classes and now you’re struggling to convince yourself to go to class, or make the inquiry. ‘I want to get fit before I start’, ‘everyone is so much better than I am’, ‘I don’t have a uniform’, ‘I’m the only girl’….

Sound familiar? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.

Whilst BJJ is an extremely beneficial and valuable addition to a fitness routine, it’s easy to see why it can be intimidating. It’s a sport that requires heavy amounts of personal contact, which for many is a hard mental barrier to overcome. Grappling Education has come up with a few tips to help you move out of this mental blocks.

1. Address that this out of your comfort zone.

Everything that makes you do better in life will start by pushing you out of your comfort zone. Especially a sport like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. If it were easy everyone would be doing it. Don’t let your inner monologue win, and push yourself to step out of your comfort zone.

2. Train with friends.

At Grappling Education we pride ourselves on being an ultra friendly and inclusive Grappling School, so you are almost guaranteed to make friends, however it does help to BYO training buddies. Did you know that Grappling Education has a bring a friend for free offer? This way you can bring someone you feel comfortable with to start a new sport with you and offer you support!

3. Take advantage of private sessions.

If your very new and you’re not ready to dive into the deep end of a full class, take advantage of private sessions. Grappling Education offers the chance to work privately with high level coaches, who are able to show you the foundations that will help you feel more comfortable with the sport.

4.Just remember, everyone is there to learn.

Whether you have been doing BJJ for 10 minutes, 10 months or 10 years there is always something to learn. Just because you brand new doesn’t mean that people will be judging you for not knowing something! You are coming to learn a new skill, increase your fitness and challenge yourself. So don’t worry about the other people on the mat, only worry about yourself.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Staying quiet is one of the worst things you can do in life, and in BJJ. Coaches are there to help you and to make sure you know what you are doing, so ask them for their help if you need it, ask the upper belts to help after practice to improve your skills. Asking questions will ensure that you know exactly what is expected of the drill, so don’t be afraid to ask.

Grappling Education aims to provide an environment that makes everyone feel at home. We have a no politics, no judgement, perspective on training. We are here to make sure that you have the best experience, with the highest quality of coaches and environment.
